Grayson Perry

The first major exhibition in Australia of flamboyant British artist Grayson Perry is showing at the MCA

By Benjamen Judd

British artist Grayson Perry is the focus of a major exhibition, My Pretty Little Art Career, now showing at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Circular Quay.

The first major survey of Perry’s work to show in the Southern hemisphere, My Pretty Little Art Career is a fascinating look into how Perry’s personal life, his politics and his activism intertwine in his art.

The exhibition is a mash up of colour, cartoons and Perry’s infamous ceramics creating a retrospective collage that would easily confuse the eye if it weren’t so darned fun to look at.

The artist’s highly decorated pots in particular reveal a panoply of imagery ranging from the highly personal to the political, their subjects including his own family, the art world, Biblical stories, the royal family, and images of warfare and sexual fantasy.

Visitors will also be able to take a look peak at Perry’s artistic process via a collection of workbooks and diaries that Perry has kept throughout his career.

The “transvestite potter”, as he has infamously dubbed himself, remains one the art world’s most controversial figures.

Unapologetically open with his opinions regarding the culture machine and the business of art and only in October of 2015 was under fire for making claims against Indigenous Australian art being shown in the MCA

My Pretty Little Art Career is currently showing at the Museum of Contemporary Art until May 1, 2015.
