GRAPHIC at the Sydney Opera House
Cartoons, comics and illustration play a huge part in our contemporary culture. The GRAPHIC exhibition at the Sydney Opera House is a celebration of this.
By Benjamen Judd
For two days starting November 4, The Sydney Opera House will become a nexus of pop culture and graphic art with the return of GRAPHIC - a festival that celebrates the art of graphic storytelling, animation and music.
Now in it’s sixth year, the organisers of the event are bringing out the big guns – including the creator of the world’s longest running (and most influential) animated series, Matt Groening and iconic cartoonist Lynda Barry. Also taking the stage is nationally loved poet and cartoonist Michael Leunig; satire site First Dog On the Moon and Brandon Graham.
But it’s not just talks – sound and film are also a huge part of the festival. George Lucas' directorial debut film THX 1138 will be re-scored for the digital age with subs, breaks and riddims by Asian Dub Foundation. This is definitely a film that ever Star Wars fan needs to see.
Since launching 2010, GRAPHIC has become evolved into a unique festival unlike any other. It has been lucky enough to present works from influential figures including Neil Gaiman, Art Spiegelman, Shaun Tan and Jim Woodring, through to musical-visual performances from Gotye, The Cinematic Orchestra and Ludovico Einaudi – all specifically created for the GRAPHIC festival.
GRAPHIC – a festival of visual storytelling, animation and music – will take place at the Sydney Opera House for two days, starting November 4.
