Così fan Tutte by Opera Australia
Mozart’s infamous Italian opera about fidelity, lies and the complexities of love will grace the stage of The Sydney Opera House this winter.
By Benjamen Judd
One of the most infamous operas of all time, Così fan tutte by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will be ringing throughout the halls at The Sydney Opera House until August 13.
Conducted by Jonathan Darlington and directed by David McVicar, the Opera Australia production takes a sparkling approach to Mozart’s tale of two men and their attempt to seduce the other’s lover.
Swept up in the cynicism of the old philosopher Don Alfonso who believes no woman is faithful, soldiers Guglielmo and Ferrando disguise themselves as Albanians to woo and trick their respective partners, the sisters the sisters Fiordiligi and Dorabella.

The four young people soon discover more about each other, themselves and life itself than any of them have bargained for.
The opera is a bittersweet look at the complexities of sexual politics, the bizarre ways we sabotage ourselves when things are going well and not the least a look at the way love can sometimes bloom in the most unexpected fashion.
Taking to the stage are some of the finest voices in Australian performances today – Nicole Car as Fiordiligi, Anna Dowsley as Dorabella, David Portillo as Ferrando and Andrew Jones as Guglielmo while Richard Anderson brings to life the dark sarcasm of Don Giovanni.
It’s bleak, it’s hilarious and it’s a lot of fun – Così fan tutte is a joyous journey of absurdity.
Così fan tutte is now playing at the Dame Joan Sutherland Theatre, The Sydney Opera House until August 13.
